Paris 2004 ~ Amazing!!!

Art has been a life long love.  I think I have been hooked on color since I got my first large box of crayons and rearranged them according to hue. I'm still playing with colors today, only now it's with acrylics.  I feel very fortunate to have found something fulfilling to devote my time and energy to from such a young age.  I pursued an education in art through college but shortly after graduation became pregnant with our first child.

We moved to Arkansas in 1991 and I became involved in decorative arts painting.  While my decorative painting career kept me very busy and allowed me to stay home with my kids, I became increasingly frustrated with the limitations on my creativity and the repetitiveness of the painting process.  So, in 2000, I decided to take a break and regroup.

It took me a few years to find a new direction for my art, but after an amazing two-week visit to France in 2004, I became inspired to paint again.  This time I focused strictly on canvases and found a style I immediately fell into.  I think it is a cross between two of my favorite types of art, Impressionism & Realism.  My years of decorative painting have helped me tremendously with the technical skills I lacked in college.  I consider them years of training, kind of like a musician learning scales before being let loose to perform and compose.  I feel such a freedom when I paint now.  I can't really explain it.

The subjects I choose for my paintings are usually found in nature.  I am fascinated with the amazing colors and details that God has put into His creations.  I love exploring His "art" and rendering my own version of it.  My goal is to convey that sense of beauty and joy of discovery onto the canvas.  I find the need to bring order to my paintings by simplifying the subjects.  It narrows my focus onto the part of my subject that I find most pleasing or interesting.  By doing this I can take out background distractions and see things more clearly.  It's part of my personality to want to organize things, so I guess it makes sense that I do that with my paintings.  Hopefully, the resulting images offer a reflection of warmth, simplicity and peace.
